Tomatoes - Health Benefits and Mouthwatering Andhra styled Tomato pickle recipe.


Introduction :

Tomato is botanically a fruit ,used as a vegetable in our daily cuisines which gives taste along with its nutrients. 

  • Tomato is rich in antioxidants named lycopene which is good for heart health and also found to reduce the risk of cancer. 
  • It also has vitamin C, potassium, Folate and Vitamin K.
  • Tomatoes are also good for vision because of its Vitamin A content. The same holds for hair too. It makes hair stronger and shiny. These were the benefits of eating tomatoes.
Tomato Pickle

Here, I am with a tomato recipe which is a pickle.This is a tangy spicy pickle made of tomatoes which goes well with Idli, dosa, chapatis and Roti. It can also be eaten with rice.
Let's go into the details of the recipe.

Preparation time : 45 minutes. 

Note : 

The tomatoes have to be washed and wiped off the water . All the ingredients have to be dry or else the pickle gets spoiled earlier.




Ingredients Required :

Tomatoes ripe - 10 to 12
Tamarind - Lemon sized 

Chilli Powder - 4 tablespoon 

For seasoning :
Oil - 3 tablespoon
Mustard seeds
Garlic - 12 cloves
Curry leaves 3 to 4 strands
Asafoetida 3 to 4 pinch


For powder:
Fenugreek seeds - 1 teaspoon
Mustard seeds- 2 teaspoon.


To prepare the powder :

Take a pan dry roast fenugreek seeds till the raw smell goes away. Keep it separately for cooling.
Add mustard seeds to it and dry roast it till it starts to splutter.
Take a mixer and add these both and grind it without water to form a nice powder.
Keep it aside as we use this at last step.

Preparation :


Take a pan, add chopped tomatoes, tamarind , required salt to it and boil it for 15 to 20 minutes till the water content in the tomatoes comes out and tomatoes is soft and mushy.

After Boiling for 15 minutes

Turn off the stove and allow it to cool completely.
Now, put the cooled tomatoes into the mixer, add chilli powder and grind it to make it into fine paste.

Seasoning :
Take a pan add oil , mustard seeds, once mustard seeds splutter add garlic cloves,curry leaves, asafoetida .Now add the grinded tomato paste and boil it for 7 to 8 minutes . Keep stirring it in between. Put off the flame and add the mustard and fenugreek powder finally. Mix it well . Tomato pickle is ready .



Seasoning for the Pickle.




Add the grinded tomatoes to the seasoning.

Add the powdered mixture finally.
You can eat it after few hours as all the powders would have absorbed well and pickles are that way it tastes better after sometime of preparation.

Note :


  • It can be eaten upto 4 to 5 days after preparation when not refrigerated. If you want to eat it in later days refrigeration is required.
  • The taste of this pickle is spicy cum tangy. Personally, I like this pickle and also loved by many who ate. Give it a try if you love spicy and tangy flavour.
  • Use dry spoon as moisture tends to contaminate pickle sooner.
